The Theory Test

Learner Drivers

The Theory Test is a computer based test made up of two parts:

Section One

A multiple choice test of 50 questions which is designed to test your knowledge on various aspects of the highway code.
There are various books available to help you study for this.
  • The Highway Code
  • Know Your Traffic Signs
  • The Essential Driving Skills

All of which are available through the DSA.
For cars and motorcycles you'll be asked the 50 questions in 57 minutes and the pass mark is 43 out of 50.

Section Two

Is a hazard perception test of 14 video clips in which you will have to identify 15 developing hazards.
A hazard is anything that as a driver, would make you slow down, brake sharply or swerve.
The pass mark for the car and motorcycle hazard perception part of the theory test is 44 out of 75.
With your first theory test booking confirmation letter, the DSA send you a CD ROM which you should watch. This explains the process of taking the theory test.
During the course of your driving lessons with Anchor, your instructor will ask you questions relating to theory test, such as sign post meaning etc.

We also provide, free of charge, a CD that you can borrow which has examples of the questions and hazard clips that will enable you to practice at home.
